In partnership with Nevermind Pictures and Killer Films, Waxwork Records is excited to release BARBARA FOREVER Original Motion Picture Score by Taul Katz.

Barbara Forever, directed by Brydie O’Connor, explores the films, archive, and ongoing cultural impact of experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer. The biopic reveals her ingenious, lifelong effort to create and record lesbian histories, personal and societal. Through her own images and words, the film centers Hammer as a prism of the cultural ecosystems around her, through the feminist and queer movements in 1970s San Francisco; the male-dominated New York art world of the ‘80s; the New Queer Cinema movement of the ‘90s; and expanded LGBTQIA+ representation in art and culture in the 2000s.

Driven by her canon of over eighty films, a vast collection of unreleased archival materials, hundreds of hours of footage, personal photographs and ephemera, and extensive audio interviews, Barbara Forever tells Hammer’s story through her own voice and visual perspective, making her the expert on her life, vision, and motivations.

The score, by New York City-based composer, sound designer, and multi-instrumentalist Taul Katz, heightens the reverence. “I was able to really experiment in making the Barbara Forever score,” they say. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I don't think I've ever made something like this before.’ It was a really exciting feeling to be surprised by my own music."

Katz built a custom sound library generated from Hammer’s film archive and on the music, they play guitar, bass, and synthesizer, while guiding a band that featured harp, piano, cello, woodwinds, trombone, and drums. Samples from the archive formed the basis for cues, utilized by Katz to create something entirely new. The music is a spellbinding match for the film itself, which tells Hammer’s story through her own voice and visual perspective.

“Out of Barbara Hammer’s massive archive, I created a library of sounds to sample within the score. The library was then like a new, filtered archive born from Barbara’s. It was really special to have the trust of the creative team, and The Estate of Barbara Hammer, to really experiment with these fragments to create something new,” Katz reflects. The outcome is as groundbreaking as the subject matter.

Hammer’s films break taboos around female sexuality, aging, illness, and queer love, often using her own body as a site of exploration and political power. Through the course of the film, she shows us that the personal is not only political, the personal is historical. Looking to Hammer as one of the first filmmakers to put a full lesbian life on screen that wasn’t there before, her work becomes a blueprint for a new generation of queer and radical artists to write their own histories into existence. This exploration of both Hammer’s life, work, archive, and her ongoing legacy provides an urgent, necessary story of queer life, feminist history, and American cinema.

Waxwork Records is proud to release THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE Original Motion Picture Score by Tobe Hooper and Wayne Bell. In celebration of the iconic film's 50th Anniversary, the long awaited score album is now available for the very first time in any format. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a 1974 American Independent horror film produced, co-composed, and directed by Tobe Hooper, who co-wrote it with Kim Henkel. The plot follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead. Over the 50 years since its release, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has become widely regarded as one of the best and most influential horror films ever made.

The film's original score by Tobe Hooper and Wayne Bell is an experimental exercise in music composing and performance that utilizes non-traditional instruments such as suspended cymbals, aluminum saucepans, a children's toy percussion set, various wildlife calls, whistles, shakers, and more. The result is one of the earliest examples of industrial music and has since become known as the "holy grail" of film scores due to its status of being either lost or destroyed. As such, Hooper and Bell's innovative score has become highly sought after, spawning countless bootlegs and attempts to re-create it for commercial gain. Waxwork Records' release of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre by Tobe Hooper and Wayne Bell marks the first time the official score will be made available anywhere.

In 2023, the original film score master tapes were discovered and then privately held at the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, TX for preservation. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's co-composer Wayne Bell painstakingly worked to have these original source material master tapes safely transferred. Bell then personally worked to construct and mix the newly transferred official Texas Chain Saw Massacre score for a cohesive listening experience. The score was then mastered by Thomas Dimuzio at Gench Mastering.

To compose the music for DISCLOSURE DAY, Steven Spielberg turned to his friend and longtime collaborator John Williams. The recipient of 54 Oscar nominations and winner of five (Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, Schindler’s List), Williams also scored Spielberg’s Close of the Encounters of the Third Kind, memorable for its iconic five-note tonal phrase used to communicate with the aliens. The Disclosure Day soundtrack marks Spielberg and Williams’ 30th cinematic collaboration. 

“Can you believe this is our 30th movie together?” Spielberg says. “And John just turned 94, and he is as exceptional now as he was at 40. It is just remarkable, the depth and breadth of his career. DISCLOSURE DAY is probably the most restrained score he has ever written for one of our collaborations—at least until it is not. But until those moments, he holds back in a way that is subtle and beautiful and enriches the experience. It is like he is accompanying the film from slightly behind it, pushing it forward. Scoring is usually the last thing we do and I always say it is the reward for finishing a movie—the reward being getting to listen to a new John Williams score."
