Waxwork Records is proud to present the debut film score vinyl release to M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable (2000).
Unbreakable, about a security guard named David Dunn (Bruce Willis) who becomes the sole survivor of a train wreck, posed the question of what would happen if superheroes were real. At the insistence of a mysterious, rare-comic-book collector named Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), who suffers from a medical condition that makes his bones shatter on the slightest impact, Dunn comes to believe that he has super strength and is impervious to injury or illness. Not only that, he has the ability to see or sense the evil deeds of others simply by touching them.
The Unbreakable score, by James NewtonHoward, was the second collaboration between Shyamalan and Howard, following their work together on The Sixth Sense. The Unbreakable score experience was unlike any the composer had had before. “Night sat there and storyboarded the whole movie for me,” Howard said. “I’ve never had a director do that for me. He wanted something that was very different, very distinctive, that immediately evoked the movie when people heard it.”
Howard and Shyamalan chose to simplify the score, and minimized the number of instruments (strings, trumpets and piano), with limited orchestrations. Some compositions were recorded in a converted church in London. “You could have recorded the same music in a studio in Los Angeles, and it would have been great, but there is something about the sound of that church studio,” Howard said. “It's definitely more misterioso.”
James Newton Howard is an American composer, conductor, and producer. He has scored more than 100 films and is the recipient of a Grammy Award, Emmy Award, and eight Academy Award nominations. His scores include The Fugitive, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Hunger Games film series.

Waxwork Records in partnership with Milan Records is excited to present ANTEBELLUM Original Motion Picture Score by Nate Wonder and Roman GianArthur. Antebellum is a 2020 American psychological horror film written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz. It stars Janelle Monáe, Eric Lange, and Jena Malone and follows a modern day African American woman who must escape from a 19th century Southern slave plantation. Veronica Henley (Monáe), a successful and prominent author, is abducted and taken back into the Antebellum period. She must free herself and others and take them back to the modern time period before it is too late.
The score was composed by Nate Wonder and Roman GianArthur, who have worked with Janelle Monáe on her numerous albums as part of her Wonderland Arts Society collective. Antebellum marks both composers’ debut film score.
“Writing the score for Antebellum has been a rewarding adventure in creating a musical bed that compliments the script while becoming its own unique character and identity within the film. It was really wonderful to work with my brother on this, it was one of the most fulfilling experiences,” Wonder said of the project in a statement. “Working with Janelle Monáe has also been a pleasure as always. We’ve done this a few times before and every time it is a thrilling experience to work on such intriguing ideas. It’s been especially heart-warming to work on this feature, as it is the next step in the evolution of her emotional pictures.”
“We’re thankful for the opportunity for this to be our first feature and to be working with Gerard and Chris on their first feature film as well,” he said. “After reading the script we started ideating in Atlanta at the Wondaland studio, and began with simple voice memos. From there we brought in a violin, viola and cello to flesh the tone and direction of the score out. The process of shaping these voice memos and growing them to eventually be recorded with a symphony orchestra has been gratifying and an unforgettable experience.”
Waxwork Records is proud to present Antebellum as a deluxe score album featuring 180 gram Black with Red Haze colored vinyl, printed inner sleeves, and design and layout by Shawn Lyon.
