Taking a Look Back at the Oscars

As the 2023 awards season comes to an end with Everything Everywhere All At Once taking home the Oscar for best picture (and seemingly everything else) we here at Waxwork Records thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of our releases that have taken home their own glittering golden statuary. Our catalog runs the gamut from best picture nominees to acting winners to a slew other recognition, both from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as other organizations. We don’t go out of our way to find award winners, we just release what we like, but it is always nice to get that recognition!

Technical Categories

A number of our releases have cleaned up in the technical categories. The Exorcist won the Oscar for best sound, Sleepy Hollow won for best art direction, and famed makeup artist Ve Neill won best makeup for Beetlejuice (and should have won when nominated for Edward Scissorhands!). Some of our other nominees include best visual effects (Kong: Skull Island), best editing (The Exorcist, Logan’s Run, BlacKkKlansman), best cinematography (The Exorcist, Sleepy Hollow), and best costumes (Sleepy Hollow). Logan’s Run also took home a special Oscar in 1977 to honor its special effects. This just goes to show how visually stunning our releases have been!

Acting

We are honored to have a few acting winners in our repertoire. Ruth Gordon won best supporting actress for playing the fiendish Minnie Castevet in Rosemary’s Baby. There were also nominees from Taxi Driver, The Exorcist, Carrie, Get Out, and BlacKkKlansman. Quite a crew of thespians we have on our label!

Score

We take this category very seriously around here. A good score can take a movie to new heights, or turn a moderately scary movie into a horror icon. We were lucky enough to release two Oscar nominees: modern jazz maestro Terrence Blanchard for composing BlacKkKlansman and film composer extraordinaire, Bernard Hermann, for Taxi Driver. Outside of the Oscars, Bernard Hermann’s classic score took home a BAFTA, as well as a Grammy nomination. That’s music to our ears!

Writing

Our winning-est category! We are honored to have released the score for a whopping THREE Oscar best screenplay winners: The Exorcist, Get Out, and BlacKkKlansman, and let’s not forget Rosemary’s Baby with a nomination. It takes a great story to make a great movie, and these movies had what it took to take home the gold!

Picture

The biggest category of them all. And we have released four nominees: Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, Get Out, and BlacKkKlansman. Four exceptional films from exceptional filmmakers. We are honored to have these soundtracks as part of our lineup!

Other Awards

There are so many other awards organizations besides the Academy that hand out their own special trophies. And lucky for us, we have some of those winners, too! Taxi Driver took the Palme d’Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. Don’t Look Now has a BAFTA for cinematography. Lovecraft Country took home a slew of Emmy awards with wins and nominations in more categories than one can put in this blog! And we would be remiss to not mention Army of the Dead winning the title of “Oscars Fan Favorite” at the 2022 ceremony.

It’s safe to say that Waxwork Records and award-winning movies go together like jump scares and jarring chords. While awards are great, that’s not why we do what we do. It’s the love for the movies and music that keep us going. We love the prestige movies and we love the B-movies! At Waxwork, we will continue to champion the artists, whether they have a shelf lined with golden statues or are on their way to getting one.
