If Braswell’s name rings a bell, that’s because it should. Having done time as the touring drummer for A Place To Bury Strangers, TR/ST, Le Butcherettes, Sextile, and many others, Braswell has performed on nearly every continent and played internationally renowned festivals such as Coachella and Cruel World. As such, it should come as no surprise that her impressive resumé shines through in the expertly crafted, ethereal dream pop of Rising. Simultaneously evoking the airy, atmospheric sensibilities of Cocteau Twins, the pop-forward experimentation of Kate Bush, and the hyper-danceable, retro synthwave of contemporary artists like Riki and Nuovo Testamento, Braswell’s self-assured presence as both a songwriter and vocalist results in an effort that bears none of the awkward growing pains one might expect from a new project. Equally arresting is Braswell’s lyrical finesse, with profoundly evocative and delicately personal narratives elevating the already deeply affecting music to heights that border on the sublime.

Moving from the relative anonymity of a drum kit to the revealing illumination of center stage comes with its own unique set of anxiety-inducing challenges, but if Braswell is experiencing any trepidation, it certainly doesn’t show in the quality of her music. Then again, when you’ve already toured with Iggy and the Stooges by age 20, maybe embarking on a solo career seems quaint in comparison. What’s beyond debate is that Braswell has a remarkable knack for songwriting and performance that is self-evident on her stunning debut. Accomplished a career as it already, Rising feels like just one more step forward in an ever-growing body of work that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

From New Line Cinema, Mortal Kombat is a 2021 American martial arts fantasy film based on the video-game series. The film serves as a reboot and is the third installment in the Mortal Kombat film series. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film follows Cole Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage or why the assassin Sub-Zero is hunting him down. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend the Earthrealm against the Outworld.

The score for Mortal Kombat is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch. In March of 2021, director Simon McQuoid revealed that Wallfisch, a fan of the original game, began experimenting with the theme's DNA before officially joining the project, ensuring the score blended orchestral elements with intense, modern EDM. The score is highlighted by Wallfisch's reimagined, EDM-infused update of the original theme, entitled "Techno Syndrome 2021".

Composer Benjamin Wallfisch explains, “When I was invited to come on board ‘Mortal Kombat,’ I was very aware of the responsibility that comes with scoring a franchise so deeply embedded in pop culture and with such a passionate fanbase. My first question was what can we do with ‘Techno Syndrome,’ a piece of music so much part of the DNA of the game and the original movies? What motifs could be reinvented and blown up to a full-scale symphonic sound world in the score, and might there be room for a full reinvention of the whole song as an EDM single in 2021? A huge thank you to The Immortals for giving us their blessing to reimagine their classic track in this way, as a celebration of the world of Mortal Kombat and its fans, and of the uplifting power of Electronic Dance Music, which the original did so much to light the fuse of 30 years ago.”

Written and directed by Damien McCarthy, HOKUM stars Adam Scott and follows a misanthropic author who travels to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes. He becomes trapped in a haunting mystery involving a boarded-up honeymoon suite, a local witch legend, and his own dark past. The film has been praised upon its release for its strong, quiet dread, atmosphere, and character-driven horror. It delves into themes of grief, Irish folklore, and childhood trauma.

Joseph Bishara is an American composer, music producer, and actor, best known for his work scoring films such as Insidious, The Conjuring, Malignant, and Annabelle. After an early influence of classical music, Bishara began experimenting with electronic and experimental music, becoming interested in groups such as Tangerine Dream. He became engrossed in horror scores after watching The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu. Bishara is known for his avant-garde style and unique approach to instrumentation and composition that suits horror films particularly well.

Joseph Bishara’s HOKUM score is driven by dark, dissonant strings, unsettling electronics, and haunting vocal choruses that gradually intensify, instilling a persistent sense of dread. Renowned for his expertise in sound design, Bishara fully leans into that craft, weaving elements seamlessly into the HOKUM composition. The result is a deeply immersive sonic experience in which the sound design doesn’t just accompany the score, it amplifies it, surrounding the listener in an oppressive atmosphere that mirrors the film’s dangerous subject matter.

“With Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, the challenge was to create an emotional and expressive score built on strangled breaths, fingernails scraping against the inside of a sarcophagus and eruptions of uncontrolled rage; a kind of undead demonic orchestra that would worm its way under the skin and live inside the more traditional musical element.”

Blending aggressive synth work with acoustic and electric guitars and sweeping orchestral cues, the music channels the film’s raw, hyper-violent energy while grounding it in a striking emotional undercurrent.

They Will Kill You unleashes a blood-soaked, high-octane horror-action-comedy in which a young woman must survive the night at the Virgil Hotel, a Satanic cult’s mysterious and twisted death-trap of a lair, before becoming their next offering in a brazen, big screen battle of epic kills and wickedly dark humor. 

The film stars Zazie Beetz, Myha’La, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette.

Carlos Rafael Rivera shares:

"Working with director Kirill Sokolov on They Will Kill You pushed me completely out of my comfort zone, and I couldn't be more grateful. Early on, Kirill told me that for this movie to work, we always had to 'keep the middle finger in our pocket.’ That meant taking my initial, delicate 'ghost story' piano opening and evolving it into 'The Sisters' and 'The Immortal' themes by leaning heavily into aggressive synths. But the score became much more than a synth gig. Treating the 'Maria Reeves' theme with a mix of classical guitar and synths brought out an eclectic color I had not reached before, blending acoustic and electric guitars with orchestral elements. The challenge was on to write massive, adrenaline-fueled sequences like 'The Fight,' that could propel the hyper-violent tone of the film while protecting its genuine emotional core. It was a deeply collaborative, iterative process that made the music bolder and more badass than I could have imagined. Can't wait for you all to hear this one."
